Government Initiatives For Food Processing Industry In India
The contribution of the Indian food industry is increasing every year, not only to the Indian GDP but also it’s share in world food trade. It’s a high-growth, high-profit sector with 32% of the Indian food market. Understandably the government of India has been very keen on the growth and development of the food processing industry in India. The Ministry of Food Processing Industry (MoFPI) has been making all-out efforts to encourage investment in the business.
Some of the major initiatives taken by the Government of India to improve the food processing industry in India are as follows:
• 100 per cent FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in the marketing of food products aims at boosting investment in the sector. There are various incentives at the central and state government levels, with the supply chain infrastructure being under sharp focus.
• A dairy processing infrastructure fund worth Rupees 8000 crore was set up in the union budget 2017-2018. This will not only help the industry but also the animal farming sector as the raw material sourced from them will benefit crores of workers in dairy farming.
• To improve the food testing infrastructure in India the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) plans to upgrade 59 of its laboratories. It also plans to set up 62 mobile testing laboratories across the country. This will not only help growth but also improve quality and reduce health hazards. This will help boost consumer trust further, leading to higher demand, consumption and consequently revenues of the food processing companies.
• To adopt international best practices in the fertilizer sector, The Indian Council for Fertilizer and Nutrient Research is making all-out efforts. This will ensure that the farmers get good quality fertilisers at affordable rates. Eventually, it would mean better produce leading to a further boost in the sector.
• The Ministry for Human Resource Development along with The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has announced a scheme for training and development of human resource for the industry. The scheme includes the creation of infrastructure facilities for degree and diploma courses in the food processing sector, Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP), food processing training centres and training at recognised institutions at state and national level. The required workforce of trained professionals can thus be readied for the future need of this high growth sector.
These steps are bound to ensure that the potential for the food processing industry in India is fully tapped in the future. This shall mean a booming domestic market and a jump in export leading to overall growth.
